Doona has three modes for different situations:

Doona is the only product globally to have successfully been tested and certified under 3 different stringent baby product standards – Car Seats, Strollers and Reclined Cradles. Moreover, Doona has been certified under these three standards in both Europe and the US.

Doona has been rated highly by both European and American consumer organizations.

For European consumer organizations:

Stiftung Warentest, and their associates at the ICRT rated Doona+ overall as good while in the pollutant test the Doona+ rating was very good.

Kidsgo magazine rated Doona+ with the highest score of 1.4 (very good) after the product was examined by a few families in their daily lives for a few months. The families pointed out that they recommend the Doona+ for being innovative, safe, and easy to use.

For American consumer organizations:

Consumer Reports rated Doona overall as very good while in the safety test the Doona rating was excellent.

NHTSA (USA National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) rated Doona with the highest score of 5 stars.

In addition, Doona has received more innovation awards than any other car seat, over 30 awards and counting!

What are the differences between the different versions of the Doona. Do I have to buy the Doona from my country?

There are two types of Doonas, the US Doona (which comes with a LATCH base) and the EU Doona (which you can buy the ISOFIX base for separately). There is essentially no difference in the two products and their functionality. Each adhere to the standard's of the countries they are certified under. Within countries, there are more differences with regards to the fabric (each country has different languages or requirements for the composition of the fabric). The specific differences between the US and EU Doona are as follows:

- how the buckle of the harness closes

- where the car's seat belt passage attaches the Doona to the car

- the different bases (LATCH vs. ISOFIX)

- the chest clip (for the US version) - chest clips are illegal by the EU standard

What is the difference between the European and the US harness?

Accepted Answer

Doona successfully passed all legally required compliance tests, as well as the beyond-compliance tests to comply with the highest European, US, and some other local standards.

Both EU Doona and US Doona are designed with a 5-point harness.

The EU standards require the harness release in a single motion. Therefore, the EU Doona harness does not have a chest clip while the US harness includes a chest clip. The EU harness buckle is a puzzle buckle where you have to place one of the tongues on top of the other then click them into the crotch buckle.

The US harness buckle is a single tongue buckle where you have to click each one tongue into the crotch buckle. IMPORTANT: This difference in design doesn’t mean one is better than another, both designs successfully passed all required tests.

The European Doona does not come with a chest buckle, is that something that is required in the USA, and if so is there a way to purchase a chest buckle?

Chest clips are not a requirement in the US, but we included them on the US version because chest clips are found on many US car seats. Whereas chest clips are illegal in European car seats (certified R44), so an EU Doona cannot have one.

Yes, the Doona is small enough to push along an airplane aisle. According to both 14 CFR 25.815 (US) and NPA 2008-18 (EU) regulations, the minimum required aisle width in aircraft with more than 20 passengers is 20 inches, which Doona can easily pass through.

How do I install the Doona on an airplane seat?

Accepted Answer

Place Doona on the respective seat on the plane in the rearward-facing position. Check the red line on the side of the Doona to make sure it is level with the ground. Lastly, rotating the armrests upwards can help with the installation of your Doona.

Feed both ends of the lap belt through the belt guides of the Doona by the handle. Make sure that the belt is not twisted!

Lastly, close the belt buckle and tighten the belt.

Can I put the Doona in the overhead compartment of a plane?

Accepted Answer

Doona Car Seats & Strollers are known to fit in large airplane overhead compartments, like 777s. However, if it does not fit, you can always gate-check your Doona or use it in an airplane seat (confirm with the airline beforehand).

What is the best way to travel with the Doona on an airplane, if I don't want to buy a seat for it?

Accepted Answer

Since all airlines allow the option to check-in a car seat or stroller at the gate FREE OF CHARGE, always gate check your Doona instead of sending it as luggage. It is safest if you gate check it in the Doona Travel Bag or Padded Travel Bag. Sending as luggage may result in varying degrees of damage to your Doona. We have specially designed a Gate Check label to prevent this from happening. The label is included with all Doona travel bags. Before traveling, ensure that the Gate Check label is properly attached to the Doona travel bag handle.

Question 14

I just flew British Airways and was not allowed to bring my Doona on! Why is this?

Accepted Answer

British Airways does not allow any Group 0+ car seats because they are always rear-facing and British Airways wants children to be front-facing. This is a British Airways specific requirement that is their own policy. We do not state that Doona can be brought onto every plane. We state that Doona is certified for airplane use and this was done in the EU by TUV, which is probably the most highly respected testing facility in Europe. Be sure, next time, to give the airline a call to make sure that:

1) rear-facing car seats are allowed and that

2) Doonas are allowed (you can tell them that the certifications Doona holds are: ECE R44, EN1888, EN12790, FMVSS213, ASTM F833, ASTMF2050 [and that it has stickers for TUV and FAA approval].

I bought a ticket for my Doona on Easy Jet but they wouldn't let me bring the Doona on, saying that it was too big for the seat! How can you say that the Doona is airplane approved when it isn't?!

As we state on our website and in our user guide, before booking tickets for your Doona, you must check with the airline beforehand to make sure that they allow rear-facing seats and specifically ask about Doonas, too. Some smaller airplanes have seats that are much more narrow than standard-size planes, so most (if not all) 0+ car seats will not fit on the seat.

If I fly to another country, can I use the Doona there?

No car seat abides by more than one country's safety regulations. Doona currently is certified under US and EU safety standards. If you buy a US Doona, you should use it in the US. Using a US Doona on vacation to Europe for a short trip is acceptable. For an extended trip (months to years), we recommend buying a Doona that abides by that country's safety regulations.

All EU Doonas can be used throughout the world wherever there are EU safety standards. All Doona models are safe.

It says on your website that Doona is made of "baby safe materials" - what does this mean exactly?

Accepted Answer

Doona is the only car seat that is certified under different standards (Car Seats, Strollers and Reclined Cradles), which warrants that the product meets the anti-flammability requirements of all of these standards combined. As such, Doona is comprised of baby-safe materials and contains no hazardous heavy metals, lead content, Phthalates, PAHs, Cadmium, Azodyes, and other unsafe materials.

The product is also tested to meet the highest flammability requirements, including California Proposition 65 and UK fire retardancy requirements - UK BS 5852.

I wanted to know if Doona uses chemical flame retardants in/on the car seats.

Accepted Answer

All materials used by Doona are carefully tested and approved under the most strict European and US standards and the REACH regulation, including SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) and meet all the requirements and do have flame retardants, but only the amount that is required by car seat regulations.

Not only are the materials used free of any hazardous chemicals, they are also tested for their durability and quality to assure the safe and continuous use of the products.

How does the Doona anti-rebound protection feature work?

Unlike typical car seats, Doona’s unique structure enables positioning the handle against the back of the seat of the car, providing the baby with exceptional Anti-Rebound protection. In case of a collision, the Anti-Rebound handle will absorb the impact and prevent the Doona from rotating quickly towards the back of the seat, thus dramatically reducing rebound injuries.

When installing the Doona in the car without the base, check the following things:

1. The Doona is installed rear facing – not front facing (and also that the red line on the side of the Doona is level with the ground).

2. The vehicle's seat belt is correctly routed through the Doona belt guides (3 points).

3. The vehicle belt is tight and locked off.

4. The Doona’s harness is properly tightened.

5. The handle of the Doona is in the anti-rebound position.

6. Shoulder pads are positioned on the shoulders (not on chest).

7. Chest clip is positioned at the chest (not under the neck) – this is relevant for US Doonas only

8. That the Head Support always used (at least when driving) to enhance protection.

9. Infant insert is removed if baby is older than 3 months or 5kg/11lbs.

The handle does not extend what should I do?

The Doona was designed with several "fail-safe" mechanisms. One of them was how the handle was designed: in order to prevent misuse, it can only be extended when the handle is in rear facing stroller position.

To rotate the handle into a stroller mode, press both white buttons simultaneously (located on both sides of the handles) and then rotate the handle to rear facing stroller position. To extend the handle, press the white button at the top of the handle and then pull the handle to towards you.

A 5-point harness better protects a child in case of an accident, when forces are transferred to the car seat and to the child. The child’s rigid body parts (shoulders and hips/pelvis bone) can withstand the high load forces of a crash better than the soft body parts (lower abdomen).

With a 5-point harness, the child’s abdomen area is better protected and does not have to endure high loads. Additionally, in case of an accident, the 5-point harness keeps the child well secured and in the safest position.

How does the Energy-Absorbing Foam work?

Energy-absorbing foam absorbs some of the impact forces that occur during a crash, keeping your child from absorbing them therefore preventing or minimizing an injury. The EPS foam also acts as a barrier between your child and the seat shell and any other rigid objects such as the vehicle door or window.

We conducted more than 100 crash tests to ensure the baby’s safety and protection in a wide range of crash scenarios. On top of the compliance testing, Doona conducted numerous tests, in extreme conditions, to assure that Doona does not just meet the standards, but exceeds them. The additional tests included a collision at very high speeds, a collision at freeze conditions, a collision using a 3-year old dummy, and/or additional weights, etc.

Doona successfully passed all legally required compliance tests, as well as the beyond-compliance tests. In frontal collision tests (the most frequent type of car accident), Doona scored a high 5-star rating.

What speed was the Doona crash tested?

Doona passed the US and EU safety regulations, which require it to be crash-tested at 50 km/hr. However, we went above and beyond the requirement and had it tested with consumer organizations, which then subsequently crash-tested it at 70 km/hr.

Can I keep using my Doona after a car crash?

Accepted Answer

In an unfortunate case of an accident, a car seat might be subjected to powerful forces. These forces can compromise the car seat’s integrity and reduce its effectiveness in protecting an infant in a car. Since we do not have a precise way of assessing how an accident might have affected the car seat, and since the damage might not be visible, we cannot determine if any meaningful damage to the Doona has occurred. Therefore, you should not use the Doona after it has been involved in a car accident.

What do I do if the Doona needs to be replaced?

If you need to replace your car seat, we recommend that you contact your insurance company about getting a replacement. We can provide documentation for your insurance company with our recommendation and the retail replacement value of your Doona. If you are based in the USA you might also want to review the guidelines developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) relating to using a car seat following a crash. Can I use the Doona with an inflatable seat belt?

Accepted Answer

Inflatable seat belts are now found in the back seats of some Ford & Lincoln vehicles (starting in 2011) as well as some Mercedes vehicles.

The current Ford Motor Company (Ford & Lincoln vehicles) Inflatable seat belt system is approved for use with Doona car seat using a lap shoulder belt standard installation WITHOUT the base. With the base, the lock-off mechanism will not close around the inflatable seat belt.

If the seat position has lower anchors, you can install your Doona base with the lower anchors. Please be aware that if you are installing the base with an inflatable seat belt, you will not be able to use the shoulder belt lock-off. Instead, lock off the seat belt with the retractor. When installing the Doona without the base, do not use the European method, use the lap-shoulder Belt standard installation.

Your Doona is not broken. Only the piece called the canopy clip has cracked, which is something that can be replaced yourself (you don't even need to send it in to be repaired).

You need to be in contact with your

local distributor

as they have those replacement parts. If you're from the US, please submit a ticket on their support website.

Be sure to send to your local distributor:
1) pictures of the broken piece and
2) your proof of purchase in order to speed things up.

Please note that if your canopy clip broke because you recently flew, we suggest seeing if the airline will pay towards this as they did the damage. You need to file a claim and they will have to pay for damages if it was done by them, even retroactively.

Question 41

Since the Doona doesn't lay flat, is the position a healthy one for newborns and babies to spend several hours a day in (as opposed to carriages that lay totally flat)? Is there a time limit (I've heard of the "2 hour rule")?

The Doona was not necessarily made to replace a stroller but more for short trips out of the car. Some countries deem the Doona an "acceptable" replacement for a stroller that is used in the car, whereas other countries do not. Most Doona customers have a stroller for their home-use and the Doona for any traveling in the car or for trips out of the car.

While many people claim there is a time limit on how long a baby can be in a car seat, it is not as simple as answer as that. Be sure to keep an eye on your baby at all times. A baby could be sleeping in a car seat, baby seat, crib, etc. for hours and be fine or a baby could be put down in something and have trouble breathing immediately.

You need to periodically check on your baby to make sure everything is okay, and don't leave your baby in *any* device, be in the Doona, a baby bouncer, carrier, etc. for too long. Babies need to stretch. Just trust your instinct and your baby should be fine.

Dr. Kinane, the doctor who oversaw the study on hypoxia for babies told us that the biggest concern regarding breathing issues and not being in a lie-down position is more with newborn babies for the first couple months of their lives. Once babies are older than 2-3 months old, the problem lessens dramatically.

The wheels of the Doona + and Doona i come out quickly, but you can slow it down by lifting the car seat off the ground when the wheels are close to the ground (so they open against the ground instead of mid-air).

How can I wash the Doona?

All of the fabric of the Doona (aside from the harness, which cannot be removed) can go into the washing machine and be washed on COLD, DELICATE cycle.

Be sure to wash them by themselves (not with other clothes that can possibly tear it) and hang them out to dry. Everything can be washed, even the Infant Insert and Head Support. But do not put anything in the dryer.

All plastic can be wiped down with warm water and dirty wheels should be flushed with warm water (do not use soap, because you don't know what might be abrasive).

Is there any way to remove the straps from the Doona car seat? My baby recently soiled the seat.

Since the harness is the most important safety aspect of the car seat, this is not a part that can be replaced by the customer.

In order to clean the harness, first make sure that it is thoroughly dry (after you initially wash off the mess). Start by putting the Doona upside down, with the fabric removed, and knock it gently on the bottom to remove as much of the loose dirt as possible. Then, using running warm water, rinse the harness off. Don't use any soaps or detergents other than water to wash it (there is a care label on the harness you can refer to). If you have a fabric spray that you know your baby does not have an allergic reaction to, you can finish by lightly spraying the harness if there is a smell remaining.

I was denied boarding on United with the Doona. They claim it's not FAA approved. Where can I get a letter saying that its FAA approved?

Accepted Answer

There is actually no such thing as an FAA sticker for air travel, as the FAA does not approve car seats for flights. Instead, in order to use a CRS (child restraint system) on a plane, it needs to meet the relevant US standard, which in Doona's case, is the FMVSS 213. We tested Doona (both the US and EU models) in the US airplane test which is part of FMVSS 213 and we passed. Therefore, we have the sticker that is permitted and required by the standard for air travel.

Therefore, we are allowed to use the official language for aircraft approval and we have it on the stickers on the Doona (both US and EU models): "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft".

Question 50

I read somewhere that someone wrote that after just a few minutes in the Doona, their baby had red strap marks on his legs from the Doona’s 5 point harness. What are your thoughts on this?

Accepted Answer

When the Doona is properly used, this should never happen. It is possible that since 3-point harnesses are common in Europe, this reviewer was not used to a 5-point harness, which is much safer to use.

Therefore, what this reviewer believed was "too tight" was a safer harness than other European car seats have. This could theoretically happen only if the Doona is misused, like having a child in it that is too big or continuing to use the Infant Insert, even though the baby is larger than 5 kg/11 lbs or 3 months old.

However, with hundreds of thousands of Doonas sold around the world, this is not a complaint that we ever get.

Can I buy a second hand Doona?

It is strongly advised not to buy a used car seat because you do not know its history and there might not be any visible signs of an accident, and a car seat that was involved in an accident is not safe for your baby and have to be replaced. Moreover, the Doona warranty is only valid for the original owner, provided it was purchased from an authorized retailer.

How to use the brakes of the Doona?

The rear wheels are fitted with a braking system which allows you to use just one pedal to control both the rear wheels.

To apply the brakes, press the red brake lock pedal located next to the right wheel.

To release the brakes, press the green brake release pedal located next to the left wheel.

Always use the parking brake when placing and removing the child or when standing still, even for a few moments! Always check that the brake is fully engaged.

Doona is a car seat first of all, with an integrated mobility solution.

The Doona does not pretend to replace a stroller or a 3-in-1/trio. If parents want to stroll their baby for long hours, we encourage them to purchase a stroller.

Doona provides a solution for modern parents who have to perform daily tasks that require running around with their babies.

Doona makes it easier to take a baby in and out of a car, taxi, train, or plane without having to carry the car seat by hand or having to connect it to a stroller. Lastly, the Doona also saves truck space in the car.

Chest clips are not a requirement in the US, but we included them in the US version because chest clips are found on many US car seats. Whereas chest clips are illegal in European car seats, so you really don't need chest clips for your Doona.

The version of the Doona you have complies with the EU Safety Standards, not the US Safety Standards. Your Doona, therefore, is 100% safe to use, but since it is not tested under the US safety standards, we cannot tell you that it is okay for you to use it in the US (if you are living there). This is true for all European and American car seats.

If I have a US Doona and travel to Europe, is this a problem?

Accepted Answer

If you are traveling to Europe for a short trip, then it is perfectly acceptable to bring a US Doona. But if you are relocating to Europe, even if it is not permanently but for an extended period of time (like, for example, the lifespan of the Doona usage), then we recommend buying the EU model of the Doona. This goes for all car seats.

The safety standards adhere to only one country and not multiple standards.

Can I use the LATCH base with an EU Doona?

Accepted Answer

We do not recommend this.

The LATCH base was tested by US safety standards and the ISOFIX base was tested by EU safety standards. While an EU Doona probably could, in theory, attach into a US LATCH base, we cannot say whether or not this is okay since they weren't tested together, nor can we stand behind any customer doing this.

Question 60

Seat belt is too short to go around the Doona. What can I do?

Accepted Answer

In some cars, the vehicle seat belt might not extend long enough to pass the vehicle seat belt over the top of the Doona after already being secured in the front belt guides.

LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. These anchors are specifically designed for car seat installation. Since 2002, LATCH connectors are required by law in the USA for all vehicles.

Check your vehicle manual to ensure that the vehicle is equipped with LATCH anchor points.
