July 4th ativities for kids

July 4th activities for kids

Independence Day is around the corner, which means picnics, sunshine, and quality time with family and friends. It’s also the perfect opportunity to introduce your little ones to the history of the Fourth of July and, of course, to have fun. From baking sweet treats to camping under the stars, we’ve put together a list of patriotic and engaging activities to keep the whole family entertained all weekend long.

Indoor activities

Independence Day picture books

Books are a great way to introduce your children to the history of Independence Day in a way they can understand. Pick up 4th of July books for kids at your local bookstore, or browse online for illustrated stories that explain how the Fourth of July came to be. For book inspiration, check out this curated list of teacher-approved 4th of July books for kids.

Get baking

For those who want to get festive at home, add some sweetness to your holiday and decorate delicious 4th of July desserts for kids. You can start with simple stars, American flags, and even a mini-Liberty Bell. Grab red, white, and blue icing, sprinkles, and simple baking tools to get started. Baking is not only a fun activity, it’s a great opportunity for your little ones to help in the kitchen and spend quality time together.

Make your own U.S. map

A great way to teach your kids about the U.S. is to get them to look at a map of the country. Pick up a U.S. puzzle for kids, and build it together. As you’re piecing it together, explore the map while having an interactive geography lesson and teaching them the names of U.S. capital cities. Once finished, paste the puzzle onto construction paper, then hang it on the wall for future learning opportunities.

4th of July crafts for kids

Get creative and keep little hands occupied with star-themed art. Grab some construction paper and cut it into the shape of a star. On a separate piece of paper, use the star cut-out as a stencil, draw a bunch of stars, and finish it with color. Grab water-based paint and glitter, and start creating your own Independence Day art project. You can also print out free 4th of July coloring pages for kids to keep your crafts station both simple and festive.

4th of July movies for kids

After a day full of festive fun, wind down with a cozy movie night. These 4th of July kids movies and shows are perfect for all ages: fun, a little educational, and full of patriotic spirit. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!

  • An American Tail (G) – A heartfelt story about immigration and hope in America.

  • National Treasure (PG) – Fun, adventurous history lesson with a treasure hunt twist.

  • Night at the Museum (PG) – Includes American history characters like Teddy Roosevelt.

  • The Sandlot (PG) – A nostalgic summer classic with a great 4th of July scene.

Shows and specials for younger kids

  • Peanuts – This is America, Charlie Brown (TV-G) – Classic and educational.

  • Mickey’s 4th of July Fireworks (Disney+) – Short and festive.

  • Paw Patrol – Pups Save the Fireworks – A fun, lighthearted episode with fireworks fun.

Protip: Look for more fourth of July movies for kids on streaming platforms like Netflix Kids, Disney+, or PBS Kids.

Outdoor activities

Prepare your perfect picnic

July is one of the best months to get outside and enjoy the warm summer weather. Pack a cooler or picnic basket with your favorite 4th of July snacks for kids, like chips and hummus, celery and carrot sticks, PB&J sandwiches, and homemade lemonade. Pack it all with a large blanket, beach chairs, and fun 4th of July games for kids then head off to your nearest beach, pool or park.

Camping under the stars

Camping is one of our favorite activities and the perfect July 4th weekend getaway with the kids. Grab a tent, blankets, pillows and snacks, and head to a nearby campsite. You can even set up in the backyard if you have the space. The kids will love being outside and sleeping all together in the tent. With some luck, you might even get a fireworks show, under the stars!
