Insights with Ashley Cummings on her pregnancy journey in honor of National Nurses Week

Insights with Ashley Cummings on her pregnancy journey in honor of National Nurses Week

In honor of National Nurses Week, Ashley Cummings (@ashleyannandco), registered oncology nurse and founder of Natural Ash skincare, shares her insights on her pregnancy journey, her experience as a nurse, and more!

In honor of National Nurses Week, can you tell us what you love most about being a nurse?

Becoming a nurse was a career change for me and I’m so glad that I took the risk and went back to nursing school. As a nurse you really get to know your patients and their families. You become their support system. I love seeing a patient get better and get back to their everyday life after receiving cancer treatment. To see them get another chance at life is the most rewarding experience and knowing that I was a part of this gives a feeling like no other!

What do you think would surprise most people about nursing?

I think many people think nurses only work in hospitals, but nurses are everywhere. They work in corporate settings, clinics, schools, remote, pharmaceutical companies and many more. It's a profession that gives you many different opportunities and experiences. You can really never get bored!

Congratulations on the birth of your new son! How was your pregnancy experience?

Thank you! It was amazing! I really enjoyed all parts of my pregnancy and am extremely blessed that I felt good throughout it. I enjoyed seeing my bump grow and my favorite part was feeling my son move. It was so cool and I tried to record it every time! I made sure to stay active and watch my diet so that I could still feel like “myself”.

What was something that surprised you about your pregnancy?

I did not have any food cravings! I thought for sure I would have them or have a huge appetite. Neither happened!

What’s one piece of baby gear that you can’t live without?

The Dreamland Swaddle! Once Andrew was home, he would just not sleep! For weeks we would take turns staying awake and holding him as he slept. Then we realized this was not sustainable. We had to sleep! I researched swaddles because Andrew did not like them at all! I found Dreamland and immediately ordered. Ever since the first night wearing the weighted sleep swaddle he’s been sleeping in between his feedings and we are too!

What advice would you give to other first-time expectant mothers?

Take one day at a time, with pregnancy and when your baby is born. It’s a lot of work, don’t be afraid to ask for help and accept it. You don’t have to do everything alone. Also, try not to be too strict with a plan and be flexible. Babies do what they want, so do not be upset if things aren’t always organized and perfect. Stay positive! Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. You got this! We are women and have the opportunity to birth tiny humans! That is unmatched! Most of all, have fun and enjoy your baby. It’s amazing watching them grow and learn.
