Celebrating Thanksgiving At Home

Celebrating Thanksgiving at home

While we may not be having large feasts with our extended family this year, there are still plenty of other ways to indulge in the food, connect with loved ones, and celebrate what the holiday is all about - being grateful.

Family photoshoot

Extended family always loves to see photos, and this is a great way for everyone to be together virtually! Get your immediate family together and do a Thanksgiving-themed photoshoot. Then gather up the photos and create fun ecards to send out to your relatives and loved ones.

Decorate your house

This year, you’ll likely need additional activities to keep your little ones busy. Try creating leaf turkeys that double as place cards, fall-themed garlands, or pilgrim hats. These make for a great way to get crafty with your little ones. Pom Pom Pumpkins are also an easy way to spruce up your house for turkey day. To take it up a notch, have your family write down something they are thankful for on the pumpkin, then display it somewhere you can all see!

Send food baskets

One of the biggest parts of the holiday is, of course, the food. There’s nothing better than sharing a delicious meal with family, especially if you each have that signature dish you make every year. Even though you can’t see everyone all together, you can still show your loved ones how thankful you are by delivering some yummy food baskets, complete with classic Thanksgiving snacks.

Have a virtual meal

Once you’ve sent out your food baskets, organize a Zoom for everyone to eat “together”! This is such a good way to stay connected even while not physically together. You can experience eating the food at the same time, have all of those classic Thanksgiving conversations, and create a feeling of togetherness.

Take it easy

Although Thanksgiving is usually a day full of cooking from start to finish, this year has been stressful for all of us. Planning ahead is an essential way to help a holiday meal come together smoothly. This year, consider some make-ahead recipes so you can relax bit and focus on this time with your immediate family! Plus, restaurants and grocery stores are there to help with pre-made or easy to prepare Thanksgiving foods. Remember, it’s all about spending time together and having fun!

Try new things

This Thanksgiving is anything but ordinary. Traditions are amazing, but there can always be new ones added or changes made! Try out a new recipe you’ve never made before, a family activity like playing a board game or charade, or going on a family walk. You may end up finding it sticks year after year. If you’re headed out into the neighborhood, don’t forget your Liki Trike and Doona Car Seat & Stroller to make it easier than ever!

At Doona, we’re dedicated to making parenting simpler, easier and more enjoyable. It’s just our way of saying thank you to all the parenting superheroes out there.

No matter what, just remember that as crazy as this year has been, this holiday is the perfect time to come together and focus on the things that really matter. Think about what you are grateful for and don’t take this time with family for granted!
