Independence Day is around the corner, which means picnics, spending a sunny day at the pool, and quality time with your loved ones. It’s also the perfect opportunity to introduce your child to the history of the Fourth of July and, of course, to have fun. From baking sweet treats to celebrate America's birthday to camping under the stars, we’ve created a list of patriotic and fun activities to keep the whole family engaged all weekend long.

Independence Day picture books
Books are a great way to introduce your children to the history of Independence Day in a way they can understand. Stop by your nearest bookstore, or visit an online retailer and find illustrated books for kids telling the story of how the Fourth of July came to be. Get cooking!
For those who want to get festive at home, add some sweetness to your holiday and decorate some delicious Independence Day cookies with the kids! You can start with simple stars, American flags, and even a mini-Liberty Bell. Be sure to pick up a colored icing and some simple baking tools to help you make your sweet treats. Baking is not only a fun activity, but is a great skill to teach your kids from a young age.
July 4th art project
Get creative with your celebration and keep those little hands occupied with star themed art! Grab some construction paper and cut it into the shape of a star. On a separate piece of paper, use the star cut-out as a stencil, draw a bunch of stars and finish it with color. Grab some water-based paint and glitter, and start creating your own Independence Day art project.
Prepare your perfect picnic
The Fourth of July is one of the best times to get outside and enjoy the warm summer weather. Start by grabbing your nearest picnic basket, or a cooler will do. Encourage your kids to choose their favorite healthy treats like chips and hummus, celery and carrot sticks, PB&J sandwiches, even homemade lemonade. Pack it all with a large blanket, some beach chairs, and head off to your nearest beach, pool or park.
Camping under the stars
Camping is one of our favorite activities and the perfect July 4th weekend getaway with the kids. Grab a tent, blankets, pillows and snacks, and head to a nearby campsite. You can even set up in the backyard if you have the space. The kids will love being outside and sleeping all together in the tent. With some luck, you might even get some fireworks right above you, under the stars!
Make your own U.S. Map!
A great way to teach your kids about the U.S. is to get them to look at the big map! Pick up a United States puzzle for kids, and help them put it together at home. As you’re piecing it together with them, explore the map while having an interactive geography lesson and teaching the names of U.S. capital cities. Ideal for a play area, paste the puzzle onto some paper and hang it on the wall for the perfect educational and colorful piece.
